How to Measure Your Dog for a Harness at Home

Your old harness says medium, but its size chart may not match the next one. Dogs of the same weight can need different strap settings too. Measure the chest and keep the figure beside the new model's name.

Put the measurement on paper

With your dog standing on a level floor, pass a soft tape around the ribs at their widest point, just behind the front legs. Put the reading on a card with your dog's name, the date and the model. The tape should touch the coat without pressing into the body.

Record the chest girth before the dog walks away. If they turn or sit, repeat the measurement. Without a flexible tape, use string, mark the meeting point and lay it beside a ruler. Add a neck figure only at the place shown on the maker's chart.

Use the chart for that model

Open the size chart for the harness under review. Match the written chest and neck figures to its ranges. Do not carry S, M or L across from another brand. Those labels may cover different measurements.

Fit the sample indoors

Open the straps before putting the harness on. Set the chest section in place, close each buckle and shorten one strap at a time. Note the setting on the card. The two-finger check can expose a tight or loose strap.

Take a short walk across the room and turn back. Watch the front legs, shoulders and the band around the ribs. Move a strap that sits in the armpit. Refit the harness if the chest piece twists, the rear band slips behind the rib cage or light lead pressure lets the dog reverse out.

Keep the setting with the harness

Write down the selected size and strap positions. A photograph helps another family member reproduce the setup. After a short walk, lift each strap and look at the coat and skin underneath. Record any adjustment on the card.

If your dog grows, changes weight or has a heavy coat trim, measure again. Cross out the old figure and write down the new one instead of tightening straps from memory. The next fitting then starts with a current record.
