How to Make Your Home Safer for a Senior Dog

Walk the route your older dog uses from bed to water bowl and door. A polished floor or a basket left in the usual path can slow them down. Home safety for senior dogs starts with that familiar route.

Give paws more grip

Place secure rugs or mats across slick wood and tile near turns and doorways. Clear cables and other trip hazards from the floor. Keep bowls and a cushioned bed within easy reach so your dog does not cross the house for each need.

Put one bed where the day happens

Start with the stairs. If your dog pauses at the bottom or loses footing, block access when you are away. Put another bed on the main floor. A ramp or pet steps can take the place of a jump into the car or a favourite chair. Keep the aid your dog uses with the least strain.

Let the room stay familiar

Poor sight changes how a dog gets around. Keep the sofa and table where your dog expects them, and move clutter out of the passage. If footsteps get no response, say your dog's name or tap the floor. Pause for a head turn before reaching down.
